Where do you find inspiration for your art?
Art inspiration is everywhere, right? At least, that’s what they say. But when you’re sitting down to make your own work, it can feel hard to find inspiration for art.
Whether you’re looking for painting inspiration or photography ideas, here’s how to cultivate a steady stream of inspiration—and actually turn it into art.
Tell me about your favorite medium.
Watercolor, the highs are so high, and the lows are so low. I'm addicted to it.
How do you define success as an artist?
Art is good when it masters the artistic elements and principles. A Formalist artist focuses on an artwork's form—the way it's made and what it looks like. In a successful piece of art, the visual features are most important: line quality, color, composition, and other artistic elements and principles.
What are your most valued skills as an artist?
Persistence, patience, and passion are necessary, but they need to be properly harnessed in order to serve you best. If an artist’s goal is to earn a living from art, he or she also needs the persistence to continue improving and creating when the artwork isn’t selling. Nothing is more frustrating—or more disheartening—than to turn out the best work of your career only to have it go unsold. The temptation to give up can become very strong, as can the temptation to paint for the market or chase trends.
Tell me how you have developed your art career so far.
Skills developed through participation in the arts are increasingly important in the workplace and therefore, key to a successful career.
