Author Interview - Michelle Min Sterling

When do you think someone should call themselves a writer?

On a fundamental level, you can call yourself a writer whenever you wish. ‘Writer’ is not a protected title unlike, say, ‘dietitian’, and needs no qualification or achievement underpinning it. Some writers get a bit gatekeeper-y and upset that everyone seems to call themselves writers these days, but I’m of the more-the-merrier school of thought.

What difference do you see between a writer and an author?

For instance, you can author a book or even a law. As a verb, author is simply a more distinguished term for write. A writer can be anyone who writes anything. An author is a distinguished and professional writer who has published and sold their work

What do the words “writer’s block” mean to you?

Writer's block is a temporary psychological condition in which a writer cannot proceed with writing.

How do you process and deal with negative book reviews?

What is the most challenging part of your writing process?

Often the most challenging part of writing is starting to write. The process of choosing a broad topic and narrowing it down to a thesis can be both daunting and frustrating.

How long have you been writing, or when did you start?

We all already know the good advice: Write about what you know and care for, read more, write more, observe yourself and others honestly. Write every day. Finish what you start. Don't waste your time or anyone else's with a piece you don't feel is your best.
