Author Interview - Julian Black

When do you think someone should call themselves a writer?

I think somebody should call themselves a writer when they have just one successful book out there.

What difference do you see between a writer and an author?

A writer is somebody who writes for their own personal pleasure. An Author is somebody who is published and has had some success with it.

What do the words “writer’s block” mean to you?

I have never suffered from this the words just flow through my fingers.

How do you process and deal with negative book reviews?

I just move on to my next book and forget all about it.

What is the most challenging part of your writing process?

Getting a publisher .

How long have you been writing, or when did you start?

I was writing in secondary school and that was how I knew I had a huge Imagination. But I did not start writing again until I was in my late twenties and early thirties. I have been writing now for twelve years.

What advice would you give writers working on their first book?

Use your own life as Ideas and bring those Ideas into your work and that is a strong point to creating a character. They always say write what you know. Just let the words come through your fingers and you'll be Suprised what you will create.

How do you develop your plot and characters?

Personally I have used my own life such as depression Anxiety , Sexuality , Loss , Bullying , Confidence , self esteem , Discouraged. All very depressing but it all makes for a gripping and unusual story.

How many books have you written, and which is your favorite?

I have written ten Books so far and they are all my favorite because they have all come from the life I have lived so Far.

What part of the book did you have the hardest time writing?

I have to say with a Secret Gay Passion the Publisher wanted more sex in the book and I had to really stretch my imagination with that as I am still a Virgin at forty five years of Age so I had to really push my Imagination on that Book as much as I could.

What inspired the idea for your book?

My First Book was A secret Gay Passion, and I was just bored with my life I was suppressed with my sexuality and suppressed with my life and I was bored beyond belief and sick to the back teeth of my life so I needed to do something with my life and so I created a book about the way I was feeling and what If I was in love with somebody and how would that have an impact on them and Me.

What was your hardest scene to write, and why?

Again it was the hardcore sex because I needed it to be really hardcore but very passionate at the same time and I hope I achieved that.

What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?

I live a very solitude Life and I work through the week and write on weekends so I need that silence and that time but I do not get any social time in my life but there again I never have had any social life so being a writer fits with my lifestyle.

If you could spend a day with another popular author, whom would you choose?

It would probably be Stephen King because he knows how to grip the reader into the story.

When was the last time you Googled yourself and what did you find?

I do this everyday and all my work is there and it gives me a lot of encouragement in my discouragement of a life. Thank God for my writing it has done so much for my self esteem and my self worth over the years in my suppressed lifestyle.
