Author Interview - Doreen Fleisch

What is your writing process like?

It was an easy task to think of ideas for the story plot. The story is based on a true experience from my dog having a fear of going inside a vet's office.

How do you come up with ideas for stories and characters?

The dogs in the story are my two favorite dog breeds: beagle and dachshund. I wanted the story to be focused on the friendship between a beagle and a dachshund.

What do the words “writer’s block” mean to you?

Writer's block just means to have a mental block that prevents you from writing your manuscript. The ideas will come to you in time.

How do you process and deal with negative book reviews?

I ignore all negative book reviews.

What is the most challenging part of your writing process?

Finding an illustrator was challenging because I do not make illustrations. Finding a good editor is also challenging.

How long have you been writing, or when did you start?

I did small amounts of writing when I was younger, but this is my first book for children.

What advice would you give writers working on their first book?

Give yourself time to think of ideas for your story. Get a "beta reader" to view your manuscript. A beta reader is a random person who does not know you and will their own opinion after reading your manuscript.

How do you develop your plot and characters?

I developed my characters based on animals. I want the animals to use the same dialogue that human people use in conversation.

How many books have you written, and which is your favorite?

1

What part of the book did you have the hardest time writing?

The middle of the story.

What inspired the idea for your book?

My dog, Henry.

What was your hardest scene to write, and why?

The part of the book was thinking of how to create the scene when the two dogs are going into the vet's office.

What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?

I need to have a quiet space to concentrate on my writing.

If you could spend a day with another popular author, whom would you choose?

Dr. Suess, Roald Dahl and Beverly Cleary.

When was the last time you Googled yourself and what did you find?

Virtual instructor for children.
