Author Interview - Jeff Crise, Amanda Busch, Josh Crise

What is your writing process like?

Josh, Amanda, and I share a similar writing process, which makes sense because we are family and share many of the same characteristics. Our writing process usually involves background music from various artists. My preference when writing is a variety of artists with a heavy focus on music, from the Beatles, Beach Boys, The Bee Gees, and Garth Brooks, sprinkled with other great musicians such as Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, The Steve Miller Band, Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), Billy Joel, Guns and Roses (GNR). For me, the genre of the music is decided by the mood and actions of the characters I'm writing about at the time.

How do you come up with ideas for stories and characters?

The two main characters are based on cats we own. Sherbert is an orange and white long hair cat, and Piper is a travel-size calico cat. One day Sherbert and Pipper were trying to get something from under our ottoman. The two would take turns looking under the ottoman reaching their arm and paw as far as they could. They were trying to retrieve a toy from under the ottoman. Josh said, "Look, it's Detective Sherbert M. Holmes." Amanda added, "And his loyal assistant Dr. Pipper." I said, "The world's greatest catastic detective duo." This led to the Sherbert M. Holmes Detective Series and the first book Sherbert M. Holmes: The Case of the Catnip Thief.

What is the most challenging part of your writing process?

The most challenging part of the writing process is finding time to sit and write without distractions. With so much going on every day, finding the time to write is a challenge, so each moment spent writing is precious and has to be productive.

How do you develop your plot and characters?

The Sherbert M. Holmes Detective Series is based on rescued animals we have owned or still own. My co-authors and I wanted to create a story and characters with only animal characters. Character development for Sherbert M. Holmes: The Case of the Catnip Thief was easy for us as the characters are based on animals we own. The plot was developed by watching Sherebrt M. Holmes and Dr. Pipper trying to reach a toy form under our ottoman. Character and plot development were more challenging for Sherbert M. Holmes: The Case of Dog Bone Alley. The detective duo leaves the safety of their home to help Mr. Sully find a missing friend. We had to create new characters and a new location the case takes place. The story was challenging at times, but we had fun writing the story.

How many books have you written, and which is your favorite?

We have co-authored two books in the Sherbert M. Holmes Detective Series. Sherbert M. Holmes: The Case of the Cantip Thief and Sherbert M. Holmes: The Case of Dog Bone Alley. My favorite is Sherbert M. Holmes: The Case of Dog Bone Alley.

What part of the book did you have the hardest time writing?

The most complicated part of the book was Sherbert M. Holmes: The Case of Dog Bone Alley. As the case was wrapping up, the last chapter was the hardest because, at this point of the plot, the resolution, all of the characters were involved. We had all the characters wanting to help the great detective Sherbert M. Holmes even though Dr. Pipper did not want the help. We had to write every character into the last chapter without overshadowing the detective duo Sherbert M. Holmes and Dr. Pipper's dialogue as they were solving the case. It was challenging but fun to write.

What inspired the idea for your book?

The Sherbert M. Holmes Detective Series is based on rescued animals we have owned or still own. My co-authors and I wanted to create a story and characters with only animal characters.

If you could spend a day with another popular author, whom would you choose?

I would choose author John Grisham and author Judy Blume. Spending a day with both authors would be fun, with extensive writing knowledge and helpful skill development. Mr. Grisham and Ms. Blume's writing resume speaks for itself!
