What is your writing process like?
I prefer outlining first using Excel spreadsheets and WriteItNow software. I've attempted writing as a pantser and usually can get a good start but bog down after two or three chapters.
How do you come up with ideas for stories and characters?
I get those by people I see, writing prompts, other books.
What do the words “writer’s block” mean to you?
Does not exist. I can always write something, even if it's brainstorming or not associated with a particular WIP project.
How do you process and deal with negative book reviews?
I remind myself they are always subjective and even best selling authors get negative book reviews.
What is the most challenging part of your writing process?
Getting started and deciding which project to focus my time.
How long have you been writing, or when did you start?
I've been writing for over 40 years.
What advice would you give writers working on their first book?
Keep going, admit you're going to write garbage and nobody needs to see the work until you believe it's ready.
How do you develop your plot and characters?
Brainstorming, asking "what if?"
How many books have you written, and which is your favorite?
I've written (and published) four books. My favorite is my novella "The Monogram Killer."
What part of the book did you have the hardest time writing?
Usually the middle.
What inspired the idea for your book?
I was listening to "Hollywood Nights" by Bob Seeger while on the treadmill.
What was your hardest scene to write, and why?
All the scenes have a degree of difficulty, primarily because I'm a perfectionist.
What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?
Nature music, sometimes candles, a good view.
If you could spend a day with another popular author, whom would you choose?
Harlan Coben.
When was the last time you Googled yourself and what did you find?
Just now for the first time and found nothing.
