Author Interview - Janice Seagraves

What is your writing process like?

I sit down, turn on my computer, find the file, and write. Nothing mysterious about it, I just do it.

How do you come up with ideas for stories and characters?

The stories just come to me. I used to be a lucid dreamer, but a funny thing happened after I became a published author, the lucid dreams stopped. Those dreams were so interactive, they were like a combination of action movie and graphic novel with a voice over. I guess that part of my brain is full filled after committing my stories to the page and having them published.

What do the words “writer’s block” mean to you?

Writer's black happened to me. After my stepfather passed away, I couldn't write anymore. I literally stopped in the middle of story I was writing. However, I could revise my finished stories with the help of a critique group, so in that way I was able to keep writing and keep publishing. The writer's block is gone now, thank goodness, and I'm able to write new stories again.

How do you process and deal with negative book reviews?

Don't read them.

What is the most challenging part of your writing process?

Getting deep into my character's emotions and commit those to the page.

How long have you been writing, or when did you start?

Unlike a lot of authors, I didn't start writing as soon as I drew breath. I was twenty, just married and had a lot of ideas swirling around in my head and wanted to write them down. Years later, I started to write with an eye toward publication and at the ripe old age of forty-eight I was published.

What advice would you give writers working on their first book?

Just keep writing. Don't give up. Evey published author out there was once an amateur like you.

How do you develop your plot and characters?

I don't plot. I'm a panster or discovery author.

How many books have you written, and which is your favorite?

Eighteen books most of which are available on Amazon. No favorite. I love all my book equally.

What part of the book did you have the hardest time writing?

Sex scenes are always hard. Hard get it, lol

What inspired the idea for your book?

Lots of things inspire me, something I read, something I saw in a movie or TV, something someone told me will spark an idea and off I go chasing that story idea.

What was your hardest scene to write, and why?

In the series matrix crystal, I had a hard time with a death scene near the end of the series. I cried like that character was a member of my family. It was tough, but I got thought it.

What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?

My computer is all I need.

If you could spend a day with another popular author, whom would you choose?

Jim Butcher. I would just love to listen to his stories about the writing life and how he came up with his books ideas.

When was the last time you Googled yourself and what did you find?

Actually, last week. There is another Janice Seagraves who is a doctor and has a foundation to raise money for something or other. She pops up a lot in my feed.
