Author Interview - Dawn

How do you come up with ideas for stories and characters?

Most of my books have been inspired by children I have worked with as an audiologist and teacher, real life experiences, and my pets. Someone recently said to me that most of my books raise awareness about a condition or situation. I hadn’t really thought about that but I guess it’s true.

What is the most challenging part of your writing process?

I think a lot about the characters and their interactions. Not all of my books have a “moral” so sometimes thinking about how I want the story to end can be challenging.

How long have you been writing, or when did you start?

I have had a passion for writing since I was very young. My school days memorabilia book states several years in a row that I wanted to be an author and cartoonist when I grew up. I wrote my first book, a novel called ‘The Miracle Chimp’ when I was 13 years old. My first officially published book was ‘And So, Ahmed Hears’ a children’s picture book that was published as a humanitarian project by Widex Canada in 2008.

What advice would you give writers working on their first book?

Write down ideas as they come to mind. I have had ideas for books come to me in dreams. I keep my phone near my bed and not down my thoughts in the notes. I used to keep pen and paper handy but the notes section on my phone is so convenient and efficient.

How many books have you written, and which is your favorite?

I have written 20 but 15 have been published. My favourite is ‘Mamas Don’t Murf’ because I laughed while I wrote it and it makes everyone laugh when they read it.
