Author Interview - James Lingard

What is your writing process like?

First, I set out the chapter titles of the new book. These will change as the story develops and some will disappear. Then, for each chapter, I note what happens in it - how the story developes. Second, I list the principle characters and the attributes of each. Only then do I begin to write a first rough draft, conscious that it will need a lot of polishing. Only when the book exists in outline do I attempt a more polished draft. This process avoids writer's block and enables weak sections to be cut out before too much effort is wasted on them.

How do you process and deal with negative book reviews?

Negative reviews can be useful in pointing out weaknesses in a book. These can be corrected in future editions. Both The Girl Who Disappeared and The Caucasus Cauldron are rewrites which benefitted from negative comments.

What is the most challenging part of your writing process?

The first rough draft. This usually entails scrapping boring material.

How long have you been writing, or when did you start?

I wrote short essays published in magazines as a student. This stopped when my professional life became busy. A major law publisher invited me to write a book on my specialist subject and Lingard's Bank Security Documents is a great success now in its 7th edition. When I retired as a lawyer, I researched and wrote Britain at War 1939 to 1945 followed by my other books.

How many books have you written, and which is your favorite?

Five books which are currently for sale and five which have been superceeded by better versions. The Girl Who Disappeared is my favourite because it is closely based on what happened to me and my family during WW2.
