Author Interview - Shinichi Sato

What is your writing process like?

My writing process is a conduit through which I channel information and expertise. I'm constantly exploring ways to optimize this medium for effective communication.

How do you come up with ideas for stories and characters?

Drawing from my personal experiences, I find it relatively straightforward to craft narratives and characters, often infusing them with a touch of humor.

What do the words “writer’s block” mean to you?

The concept of writer's block is somewhat unfamiliar to me, as I approach writing with a fluid and adaptable mindset.

How do you process and deal with negative book reviews?

I perceive negative feedback as a crucial aspect of growth, balancing constructive criticism for projects with understanding personal perspectives. Each form of feedback is vital for development.

What is the most challenging part of your writing process?

Striking the right balance between realism and fantasy in my writing is the most challenging aspect, as it requires a delicate blending of two distinct elements.

How long have you been writing, or when did you start?

My journey in writing began with short pieces in 2005, and I ventured into longer formats in 2019.

What advice would you give writers working on their first book?

My advice would be to look beyond your work and observe your surroundings, neighbors, and the world at large. Often, the most compelling stories are born from the world around us, not just from our imagination.

How do you develop your plot and characters?

I focus on consistency in character development. This doesn't necessarily mean logical consistency, but rather consistency in portraying human nature and emotions.

How many books have you written, and which is your favorite?

I've written three books, each undergoing several revisions. My favorite is undoubtedly my first one, titled 'Equity', which holds a special place in my heart.

What part of the book did you have the hardest time writing?

Crafting metaphors has been the most challenging for me. Illustrating the transition of a metaphor, like a blue apple turning red, represents complex themes such as growth, maturity, or a descent into darkness, mirroring the intricate nature of human life.

What inspired the idea for your book?

Social issues have been a significant inspiration for my books. These issues, which have persisted from my childhood through adolescence and into middle age, stand as a constant reminder and call to action, urging me to address and articulate them in my writing.

What was your hardest scene to write, and why?

Writing about concepts that don't exist in the real world is exceptionally challenging due to the lack of reference points. My imagination, while vast, has its limits, so employing analogies and explorative thinking becomes invaluable, not just in writing but also in other fields like business and research.

What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?

A key element in my writing space is the presence of sound, but not noise. Sounds that create a 1/f fluctuation, like gentle waves or rustling leaves, help me relax and maintain focus.

If you could spend a day with another popular author, whom would you choose?

I would choose Haruki Murakami. His characters, often portrayed as cool and inevitably charismatic, remind me of figures in spy novels or movies like James Bond. Spending a day with him would be like stepping into one of those thrilling narratives.

When was the last time you Googled yourself and what did you find?

I Googled myself today and discovered many individuals sharing my name, ranging from guitarists and shogi players to high-ranking bureaucrats. It's fascinating to see the diversity of paths taken by those who share a name.
