What is your writing process like?
Long! I get an idea and start writing it down bit by bit until I get another creative spark. My illustrations of course come after!
How do you come up with ideas for stories and characters?
My rabbits children’s book was inspired by my two pet rabbits at the time, Missy and Mr. Bun. My ideas for my two new books that I’m currently working have been around for a while, my dad also inspired me with a character that I’ve built my whole story on. He’s awesome! (And so is dad)
What do the words “writer’s block” mean to you?
I hate writers block - I get creative spurts and then nothing. When that happens I step away and either have a break or resume another activity.
How do you process and deal with negative book reviews?
Luckily (!?) for now I haven’t.
What is the most challenging part of your writing process?
Getting character consistency and grammar that reads correctly. Also, my new book is stepping out of my comfort zone entirely regarding the illustration aspects. I’m not going to deny it’s been challenging (and still is) at the best of times!
How long have you been writing, or when did you start?
Oh gosh, the ideas were there for a while - but I published my first book around 2016.
What advice would you give writers working on their first book?
Keep going. Take a break when it gets hard but never give up.
How do you develop your plot and characters?
I just start writing and take it from there. The art follows.
How many books have you written, and which is your favorite?
1. Currently working on 2 and 3. I couldn’t choose right now!
What part of the book did you have the hardest time writing?
It’s all a bit tricky to be honest
What inspired the idea for your book?
As before, my rabbits and my dad. The second book is inspired by my first born.
What was your hardest scene to write, and why?
Nothing, so far.
What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?
Organised and clear space. I’ve set up a hot desk in front of my living room window. I love sitting there creating and watching the birds and wild rabbits out in the garden. It’s my little bit of peace.
If you could spend a day with another popular author, whom would you choose?
Sooooo many, but it would be either Julia Donaldson or Ben Aaronovitch! I’d love to spend a day with the illustrator Axel Scheffler though (does he count?).
When was the last time you Googled yourself and what did you find?
Haven’t done that in ages but vaguely remember last time there was a Claire Sells selling properties! Ha!
