Author Interview - Wallace E Briggs

What is your writing process like?

Some describe the process as 'pantsy' ie by the seat of my pants without planning.

How do you come up with ideas for stories and characters?

Every conceivable idea has already been thought but not necessarily recorded. The ether that surrounds us is brimming over with thoughts that need to be plucked. If you can empty your mind you may be lucky, or skilled, and some of those idea will lodge in your, my, grey matter. Expressing those ideas, making them physical, by getting them down on paper is where the authorship comes in.

What do the words “writer’s block” mean to you?

When the process stalls it is time to take a break. Fill your mind with unrelated debris and repress any thoughts of writing ... for a while. Come back to writing when the mist clears and you see a different perspective.

How do you process and deal with negative book reviews?

No writer on Earth can satisfy every critic and no one is perfect in all respects. No one is. If the review is constructive give it some consideration otherwise forget it.

What is the most challenging part of your writing process?

Without a doubt: promotion!

How long have you been writing, or when did you start?

I wrote my first story when I was at school aged 10/11, For my efforts I was caned for telling lies. I didn't try again until I was almost forty.

What advice would you give writers working on their first book?

Try not to edit as you write. Get the story out and on paper. Then begin as many edits as it takes, Finally proof read several times. preferably use a professional.

How do you develop your plot and characters?

'Pantsy'! L just let it come and then ion the editing I may spot inconsistencies which require a rewrite.

How many books have you written, and which is your favorite?

I have ten books published via Amazon, six of which make up a series of children's fantasy adventures based on a single central character. The first book in that series is my favourite.

When was the last time you Googled yourself and what did you find?

Never
