Author Interview - G.J. Prager

What is your writing process like?

1- They call me a 'pantser' or something like that, which alludes to the way I construct stories from imagination and instinct rather than from a written outline. Nevertheless, I will outline my work and plan ahead as I go along, but I tend to rely on instinct and improvisation which come naturally to me with my theatrical background.

How do you come up with ideas for stories and characters?

My characters come to life from imagination and life experience, and many are composites of real people I've known. I allow my stories to germinate in my mind from a simple idea to a more complex structure before I'm ready to begin the writing process.

What do the words “writer’s block” mean to you?

I don't believe in writer's block, only a lack of inspiration that can stop me from writing.

How long have you been writing, or when did you start?

I started writing about 20 years ago and in all that time I've finished five novels, published four, and I'm currently working on a sixth.

What inspired the idea for your book?

Not For Hire was inspired by current events, crime novels and spy novels, film noir, classic films, and my own struggles and challenges.

If you could spend a day with another popular author, whom would you choose?

My favorite author is Raymond Chandler, and if I could bring him back to life I'd sit him down in a pub and talk crime novels over a bottle of whiskey and beer chasers.
