What is your writing process like?
I write in snatches of time, little bits, digest what I've written, mull it over, and return with the new ideas that pop up in the shower, or while driving to the grocery store. Eventually, everything comes together, and then...revise revise revise!
How do you come up with ideas for stories and characters?
Sometimes my story ideas are based on important life events, sometimes they just pop into my head in the "what if?" category, which has led me to write some odd stories, like the story about Hitler being reincarnated as a Jewish dentist (or was he?) Check it out in my story "The Monster Inside" in my book BROTHERS, FATHERS, AND OTHER STRANGERS. Sometimes my stories are an extension, exaggeration of a real life situation, such as when I was threatened with a layoff at work, which, luckily did not wind up happening, but led me to write the story "After the Layoff" (also in BROTHERS).
How do you process and deal with negative book reviews?
You can't please all the people all the time. Some people will like your book, others won't. What people like is a very subjective thing. It's just a fact of life. I do not like thrillers, mysteries, horror stories, so....I would imagine I wouldn't pick up such books to begin with. But...that said, just grin and bear it, although it may be painful, especially when the reviews are just...NASTY, uncalled for, like a review of one of my books that said the book was "just full of nonsense." (What? Did you even read the book??) So fume a little, read you overwhelmingly positive reviews, and take it with a grain of salt.
How long have you been writing, or when did you start?
I've been writing pretty much forever, but started in earnest in college.
How many books have you written, and which is your favorite?
My books so far are:
A FACE IN THE MOON (novel)
PETTY OFFENSES AND CRIMES OF THE HEART (literary short stories)
BROTHERS, FATHERS, AND OTHER STRANGERS (literary short stories)
I don't think I have a favorite, but BROTHERS was the most organized around specific themes.
