Author Interview - Mimi Tallo

What is your writing process like?

Mostly flow of consciousness at first. Then flesh it out and do some research. Have friends edit because I always miss something.

How do you come up with ideas for stories and characters?

First book was a memoir. The second book was born out of discovering my father who was adopted was 100% Irish . That took a lot of research but developed into an interesting book factually true but with fictional backgrounds for my ancestors. When I got to the twentieth century, I then could verify their actual occupations. My third book was a workbook to help heal from trauma and abuse. Having survived depression, abuse, and alcoholism, I had a lot of experience.

What do the words “writer’s block” mean to you?

When coming up for concept for next book feeling blank. Having no motivation. I take a writing vacation for a few days to a week and that usually clears the flow.

How do you process and deal with negative book reviews?

I only had one. That person said they found a few typos and one of the pages was loose. I just laughed.

What is the most challenging part of your writing process?

Finding the time. I am a caretaker of spouse with Parkinsons, a mother, a grandmother and a great grandmother. Scheduling and time management are key.

How long have you been writing, or when did you start?

Started in 2021 after developing severe depression from the pandemic of 2020. Writing was my medication.

What advice would you give writers working on their first book?

Write about what you know. If you are writing some parts that you don't know then do your research.

How do you develop your plot and characters?

So far my books are all non-fiction.

How many books have you written, and which is your favorite?

Three and working on the fourth. My first one is my favorite, "Raised by Wolves Trapped by Demons."

What part of the book did you have the hardest time writing?

The shameful things in my family like pedophilia, alcoholism and domestic abuse.

What inspired the idea for your book?

My therapist advised me to write as a way to deal with my depression.

What was your hardest scene to write, and why?

A very violent scene with my ex-husband involving guns and titled Russian Roulette.

What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?

Silence and light

If you could spend a day with another popular author, whom would you choose?

Brene Brown

When was the last time you Googled yourself and what did you find?

yesterday. Pleasantly surprised to see all my books, podcasts, website etc. come up. I am a vigilant marketer.
