Author Interview - Howard Berkeley Rourke

What is your writing process like?

Intense, filled with constant references back and forth to make sure my characters are always correctly identified, that the story line is consistent.

How do you come up with ideas for stories and characters?

From the news, from my head, from historical knowledge, from dreams I have, from thoughts of characters described to me by others in the past.

What do the words “writer’s block” mean to you?

Nothing, never had it.

How do you process and deal with negative book reviews?

I don't. If my book does not resonate with an individual who chooses to post a negative review, I do nothing, say nothing.

What is the most challenging part of your writing process?

Editing.

How long have you been writing, or when did you start?

Started about 1992.

What advice would you give writers working on their first book?

Persevere. Don't quit or give up on your idea.

How do you develop your plot and characters?

Tying the characters together with the story line works best for me.

How many books have you written, and which is your favorite?

Approximately 20. I have no favorite of all of them. I write in different genres.

What part of the book did you have the hardest time writing?

The ending in almost every case.

What inspired the idea for your book?

Many things as I have said before. I have many books.

What was your hardest scene to write, and why?

Sex scenes are not my specialty, and I am not great at them. I do not want to be graphic. If you are not graphic in a sex scene it becomes very difficult to write.

What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?

Nothing.

If you could spend a day with another popular author, whom would you choose?

Stephen King.

When was the last time you Googled yourself and what did you find?

Never have.
