Author Interview - Medusa Stone

What is your writing process like?

Normally I like to sit down with a coffee and map out the book, a general idea of the story line, conflict and the resolution, then I divide it in the number of books that I plan to write for that series, then I structure each book into chapters, so that I don't get sidetracked and lost in the details. It's good to have a bit of self-discipline, otherwise it's very easy to get carried away.

How do you come up with ideas for stories and characters?

I think of story lines I would like to read myself or watch in a movie, then I put a face to each character by choosing a popular actor that would fit that profile. After that, I ask what that person would do. Often times, i put them in certain situations and just let them do, by the end of the book, I'm even shocked myself by the characters choices.

What do the words “writer’s block” mean to you?

I don't normally get writers block, however there have been a few stories that I have been very excited about, but as I developed them, I found myself unsure of where to take them... They are still sitting on the shelf, waiting to be dusted off.

How do you process and deal with negative book reviews?

I take them very hard and very personally at first, then I try to learn from my mistakes, using them to better my writing. Finally, I write their names down and kill them in my next book!

What is the most challenging part of your writing process?

Being able to please my audience whilst being faithful to myself and the characters.

How long have you been writing, or when did you start?

I have been writing all of my life, but I published my first book in 2019.

What advice would you give writers working on their first book?

It's been nearly 5 years and I have only just learnt the importance of social media and marketing. If I had dedicated a little time each day to Instagram and Facebook, even TikTok, I would not have to start from 0 so far down the line. Also, it is crucial to create your own author brand, and create a solid foundation before you even start.

How do you develop your plot and characters?

I create the world, situations and characters, and let them develop themselves organically, this means allowing them to react in honest ways, without my authorly god powers influencing their decisions.

How many books have you written, and which is your favorite?

I have written around 50, and published around 25. My favorite is yet to be published, named the shadow within. Of the ones that are available, (even though I love them all equally, they're my babies) I would have to say David's eyes.

What part of the book did you have the hardest time writing?

I have a hard time putting my characters through tragedy and heartache. In my latest book, Hunted, I really did not like the suffering he had to endure in order to survive, especially by the hand of the main villain.

What inspired the idea for your book?

Most of my books, including Davids eyes, are based on real-life events of sexual trafficking and exploitation. In Hunted, I wanted to bring this sad reality into a more paranormal context.

What was your hardest scene to write, and why?

The hardest scene to write was Eliotts first transformation, I wanted it to be as realistic and graphic as possible, whilst also addressing his own experience. I am very happy with the way it turned out

What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?

A great back support and lots of coffee!

If you could spend a day with another popular author, whom would you choose?

Anne Rice. I love her ability to set the mood, getting us into every character's point of view and skin. I also love the mystery and action packed goodness!

When was the last time you Googled yourself and what did you find?

Just now, I only found my social media pages and amazon store... Soon I will be everywhere!
