Author Interview - Marco S. Teixeira

What is your writing process like?

Actually I tend to begin with illustrations; of characters and places, either painted in great detail or just quickly sketched. It is only when I have a satisfactory number of those kinds of visualizations that I then start putting down the words to connect them all. Even when the final work ends up not having illustrations at all, that is still my prefered method.

How do you come up with ideas for stories and characters?

I am fortunate enough to have ideas come to me in all sorts of scenarios and quite frequently at that. I get them when I am asleep, those are the most common ones but I also get them when going for a walk or when enjoying all sorts of entertainment. I have to say that having a deep pool of knowledge of other people's works also helps a great deal; I even dare to deem it fundamental.

What do the words “writer’s block” mean to you?

A test. Yet another opportunity for one to show what they are made of and how bad they really want it. Not to downplay it for any other but to me it is just another obstacle to overcome.

How long have you been writing, or when did you start?

I have been writting for over twenty years. From quite a young age I learned that writting, and illustrating for that matter, was something I could do on my own. A way to tell my stories without being chained to the whims of anyone else. It relies on you and you alone to see it done.

What advice would you give writers working on their first book?

Keep going. No matter how pointless all may seem at times or what promises of difficulty will loom on the horizon, just keep going. One word at the time for every word that you put down is a small victory.
