Interview - Mark Manson

Why did you decide to start your own business?

Many entrepreneurs start their businesses to follow their dreams and fulfill their passion. Following your dreams will fulfill you in a way that working for someone else may not do. You are in charge of creating your business from the ground up, so you can shape your company to be something you’re proud of and that you may even be able to pass on to your children as your legacy.

What advice would you give someone just starting their own business?

The first thing I would highly recommend is undertaking the new venture as a learning experience. While it is absolutely important to do your research and due diligence before beginning your entrepreneurial journey, it’s very important for you to understand that much of the information you will learn as you are in business. So be patient with yourself, allow yourself to learn and just be open.

How do you deal with fear and doubt?

Self-sabotage is among the most prominent reasons why entrepreneurs quit following their dreams and instead decide to live a life of obscurity. Whether it is your inner critic questioning your every move or some events happening in the market that make you reconsider if it was even the right decision to start your business, many things can stop you on your way to the top. Luckily, most of them are limited to our minds, so it shouldn't be that difficult to get rid of them, at least in theory. When you learn how not to fall prey to self-sabotage, you will be able to elevate your life and destroy any obstacles in your way as soon as they appear.

What is the hardest part of being an entrepreneur?

As a highly motivated person, I didn’t expect for the smallest thing to take, sometimes, days to fix. I learned that “divided waters lose force.” It’s crucial to roll out your business methodically and expeditiously. Even the slightest acceleration can cause a delay. Don’t let your enthusiasm cause you to “overly multitask” and create unnecessary setbacks.

What is your favorite part of being an entrepreneur?

Solving a problem for someone, or a company, is the time-honored strategy of business. Give people want they need to get over a hurdle and you’ll enjoy success. You’ll also create a huge number of raving fans that’ll ultimately become customers. People want to do business with people that help them. It’s a no-brainer.
