Interview - Peter Hollins

What advice would you give someone just starting their own business?

You should be self-sufficient, have plenty of initiative, be determined and resilient, be responsible, have a bit of imagination and be prepared to ask for help when needed. You will need initiative, determination and persistence, resilience and a willingness to take personal responsibility for your successes and failures. Make sure that you take advantage of the extensive advice available from Business Support Organisations.

How do you deal with fear and doubt?

You’re always going to have self doubt. We’re human. The key is to take the doubt, acknowledge it and then lock it away. Spend your energy and focus on your mission which should be building a successful business. Personally, when I had self doubt early on, I would double down and work 10X harder than I thought I needed to. Focus on the small wins and start adding more and sooner than later you’ll start to get momentum. That can go a long way in erasing doubt.

How did you market your business when it was brand new?

Demonstrate Your Uniqueness. Avoid Information Overload. Measure The Market Predictions. Engage Your Potential Customers. Set Clear Goals. Keep An Open Business Mind. Use The PESTLE Framework.

What is the hardest part of being an entrepreneur?

You probably think about the lifestyle and money that comes with success. You think about what you are going to build and how it could be game-changing. You salivate at the freedom to invest your sweat where your heart is. You think of the global network you could have, the learnings along the way, the people you could be rubbing shoulders with, the funds you could raise, the possible lucrative exit and the PR. Maybe, you even think about awards and accolades. But perhaps you don’t think hard enough about the high levels of stress entrepreneurship comes with. You don’t dwell on the heartburn, the burnouts, the time lost with friends and family, the health compromises you will make (at least for the first few years) and you probably don’t think hard enough about how it could all go downhill and take you down emotionally with it. And most often, you don’t think about being an average entrepreneur – if you are anywhere near the startup ecosystem that is.

What is your favorite part of being an entrepreneur?

Entrepreneurs certainly experience extreme highs and lows at unpredictable frequencies. The highs have been numerous, and that's probably what keeps entrepreneurs as entrepreneurs once they have tried it.
