Author Interview - October Grae

How do you come up with ideas for stories and characters?

I add so many little true stories to my books. For example, in The Light Beneath when Rowan, Fox, and Alec stole someone's mailbox. That was something some kids at my high school did to another student. There are a lot more inside jokes or true stories in my writing that I fictionalise.

How long have you been writing, or when did you start?

I've been writing since I was in middle school. My 7th grade English teacher told me that I'd grow up to be a writer. She was right.

What advice would you give writers working on their first book?

Write the book even if it turns out terrible. A bad book is better than an unwritten one.

What inspired the idea for your book?

Mental illness is something I've seen a lot of people I know struggle with. I've also struggled with it myself. At its core, that's what The Light Beneath is about.

What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?

My headphones. I write best when I'm listening to music or brown noise.

If you could spend a day with another popular author, whom would you choose?

Jules Verne. I didn't even have to think twice about this answer.
